The Health Cares Exchange Initiative, Inc.

Global Staff Retention and Resilience since 1992
The Health Cares Exchange Initiative, Inc. (HCEI) was founded at Boston three decades ago in response to the stress and burnout that caring persons face.  HCEI talks about issues on which most others remain silent.

Stress has been documented to contribute to cancer, arthritis, dementia, suicide, diabetes, and heart disease.  Each year employees with chronic health conditions cost US industry $84 billion in lost productivity, wages and service delivery and stress costs American industry more than $300 billion overall.   While Americans leave $430 million in paid vacation days unused each year, staff turnover in the US costs employers at least $5 trillion.  More than 440,000 Americans die each year from preventable hospital errors.

As a response to our first-ever nationwide focus groups for care providers, HCEI's self-care seminars have been delivered to thousands of persons across the US.  In 2004 HCEI became the first organization to create international collaborations around burnout prevention for caring persons, presenting wellness seminars across the UK.

In the face of COVID, who cares about you?  What have you and your colleagues done to promote self-care skills building recently?   Please view the video below to explore ways in which we can collaborate.

HCEI works to provide resilience skills building for persons at risk for stress and burnout.  Benefits of collaboration may include:
  • reduced medical errors, liability, and gaps in care
  • reduced employee absenteeism and turnover
  • increased wellness, employee health and engagement.
